Frans of the SADPA writes: CUSTOM HOLSTER MAKER IN SOUTH AFRICA Good holster makers are scarce; in fact any holster maker is scarce in present-day South Africa. If you have an unusual pistol, like my obsolete Star PD, there is nothing available off-the-shelf. My only option was to order one from Milt Sparks. Besides paying in US$, the delivery time is long. The other USA custom holster makers did not have a model, or die, for a Star PD. I recently discovered Don Burger of African Story: Don was not only prepared to make me a holster, he also listened to and discussed my requirements. One of my requests was for a Summer Special, but the other was a Versa Max 2. The latter one was new to him, so I sent him a picture and from this he made me a prototype to evaluate. I have now worn the Versa Max style holster constantly for six days, and it is very comfortable, more comfortable than my previous Summer Special style holster. It took a while to dawn on me, but I eventually realised that I didn’t need to readjust the gun and holster when getting up from sitting or lying down. The wide-spaced loops fix the holster solidly to my belt. I also used the holster at the last league competition. It performed flawlessly, holding the gun steady and not requiring any readjustment. My score was not so good, with three hostages shot, but that’s another story. When getting ready, I normally check that the gun and holster are sitting right when asked "Shooter are you ready?". Quickly I realised that this was not necessary. Even the tee shirt does not move and require re-tucking. The snap studs are of the conventional type. During normal wear the studs remain closed, but when the belt is loosened the studs do snap open. One-way "dot" studs would be more secure, but if conventional studs are the only ones available, that’s OK. So if you are in need of a holster for that special pistol, or revolver, I suggest you contact Don. |
